Where does asking the barber for ';A little off the top'; come from?

We all know the movie cliche: Guy goes into the barber shop and asks for, ';A little off the top';. If a barber really only trimmed the top of his head and left the sides and back long, he'd look goofy. If he really wants something quick, he'd be better off getting the sides and back trimmed and leave the top alone. Any barbers or hair stylists out there who know where this comes from? Any old movie buffs who can explain this 'joke'?Where does asking the barber for ';A little off the top'; come from?
